God of War 3 PC Port Texture Issues and Workarounds

Update the diagnosis before changing settings: release 2.3.0 fixes a specific texture-cache problem, while other graphics issues remain.

Identify texture corruption or lighting errors

Separate an incorrect game image from a game that never reaches rendering. If the window stays black from launch, begin with startup troubleshooting. This page concerns a game that reaches a scene but displays broken surfaces, colors or lighting.

Before making changes, note the project version, GPU, driver, render resolution and the scene where the problem begins. If the same surface initially looks normal and later turns yellow or white, say so in the report. A screenshot and a save immediately before the change are more useful than a general statement that all graphics are broken.

Check the fix against your project version

The most important version boundary is 2.3.0. Its release notes announce a fix for texture-cache invalidation associated with yellow/orange/white or missing surfaces. Pull request #331 documents the diagnosis and provides actual before/after images from an identified test setup.

Situation Useful action Important limit
Older release with the reported yellow/white corruption Back up your data and obtain a current package Updating does not prove every rendering issue is fixed
Deferred GPU readbacks were disabled as an old workaround Read the 2.3.0 guidance before carrying that setting forward The release recommends re-enabling it for the fixed case
Corruption remains in 2.3.0 Record scene, resolution, GPU and log Treat this as a reproducible remaining report
Steam Deck block corruption Check that your AppImage includes the RADV fix Follow the Deck-specific checks

Issue #18 is historical context. The maintainer distinguished an older patch-applicability fix from later corruption occurring after playtime. A closed old report does not mean every future texture symptom has the same answer.

Resolution and GPU-specific problems

Use 1080p as a diagnostic reference, because the 2.3.0 release’s texture validation is described at that resolution. This is not a claim that 1080p is the fastest or best setting for every computer.

When comparing two runs, keep the scene and other settings constant. If only a non-native render resolution causes the issue, report both values. Reinstalling the same package repeatedly does not preserve this useful comparison.

NVIDIA reports

The texture pull request identifies a test on an RTX 5070. That is evidence for a particular fix on that system, not a guarantee covering all NVIDIA cards. Laptop GPU selection is a separate startup concern, covered on the not-launching page.

AMD and Intel reports

The release notes retain resolution, lighting and model-specific GPU failures. Match your adapter and error to the report. Avoid treating every black line, blue image or device-loss error as the same texture-cache bug.

Workaround costs and unresolved cases

An older workaround may trade visual correctness for frame pacing. The texture pull request discusses the extra texture-refresh work introduced by its correction and requests testing beyond its initial setup. The release later supplies additional validation; read both in that order.

If you need to try a temporary setting change, record the starting value, alter one option, restart if required and compare the same scene. Keep a note of any new stutter or missing effects. Do not call the result a confirmed fix until it is repeatable for the stated version and configuration.

For controls that influence image quality and frame pacing, see FPS, resolution and stutter settings. This site has not generated its own before/after gameplay images or measured a performance gain; the linked pull request is the source for its own screenshots and test findings.
